1. Community Engagement and Outreach

Radio Kingston is dedicated to supporting and celebrating a healthy, just, and vibrant Kingston.

The Radio Kingston Tech Team

The work done by our Tech Team to support local organizations and government spread their messages and missions is in service to the Kingston community. From the lending of a basic PA to help amplify voices at an event to creating a remote studio set up to broadcasting the State of the City address and a Common Council meeting, complete with a Zoom interface that allowed people to make comments in real time, the Tech Team responds to a myriad of ever changing production asks, in support of the many voices of our one community.

On June 18, 2023 we hosted a free community picnic – the Sprummer Celebración – where we actively recruited for new members of the Tech Team. We provided fliers in both English and Spanish and met with community members to discuss the training opportunity the Tech Team provides. Our Tech Team requires zero experience, but does require passion for audio and a deep desire to learn.

During the reporting period, the Radio Kingston Tech Team supported 146 events and 67 organizations in the Kingston area.

Spanish Language Events

During the reporting period, Radio Kingston’s Spanish Language Team curated a diverse array of events  and offerings intended to amplify the voices of the Spanish-speaking members of our community and deepen our station’s connection with these community members.

Included in these initiatives was the Grupo de Mujeres Artisanas, a series of twice monthly workshops intended to foster creativity, community, and the cultivation and sharing of traditional art forms of Mexico, Central and South America. Workshop participants were also encouraged to share their skills with each other and step into a facilitation role, creating opportunities to develop confidence and communication.

The Spanish Language Team also broadcasted weekly from the UIDN Market, further expanding Radio Kingston’s reach in the community, and inviting engagement with community members who have recently immigrated to the area.

2. Contributing On-Air Host and Podcast Programming Recruitment

All community members are welcome to contribute an idea for programming or a podcast at anytime via WKNY’s web portal, radiokingston.org year round.

In October 2023 Radio Kingston convened a Programming Committee, comprised of Radio Kingston Staff and Community Members, to spearhead the selection of new radio shows for the station. Two public meetings were held during the month to outline the stations criteria for potential shows, emphasizing intention, host engagement, idea novelty, and the hosts’ responsibilities. Over 60 show submissions were received, and the committee carefully evaluated each proposal to ensure alignment with the station’s vision. Of these 60 submissions, at least 8 new radio programs will hit the airwaves in 2024, continuing the station’s commitment to hyper-local, diverse programming.
