JUST DO IT! Theresa gives a shout out to NIKE and their endorsement of Colin Kaepernick, (and surprisingly Shana reveals that she said ‘no’ to NIKE licensing one of her songs back in the day..wha??) Since tomorrow are the NY primaries we also talk about some of the candidates that are running, and we both agree that we feel we are due for a change in NY politics! One of Shana’s favorite political podcasts, Pod Save America aired an interview with Stephanie Shriock of Emily’s List and Shana wanted to play an edited version of the conversation on our show. They are an inspiring look into women in politics today, and maybe it will keep you feeling inspired as well. 🙂
Our first guest is Jessica Dupont of Half Moon Books . She tells us a story of walking by the then for sale book store while waiting to pick up a pizza for her young family and how she decided that she wanted to buy the store and within 6 months she did! She says that owning the store was likened to being a new mom, you don’t have the answers, you just have to figure it out. “It’s better that I didn’t know the challenges of running a bookstore because I might not have taken the leap!” Jessica shares her approach to shelving the books in her store which breaks down the black/white, male/female categories that keep us reading the same words by the same people, changing our perspectives and the world one shelf at a time!
Our second guest is Allison Braun of “Smell the Damn Roses” hobby festival this Sept 22nd in Stone Ridge NY. Born with a disease where her body continuously produces cysts, she underwent a major surgery around the age of 6-7 which stopped the outbreaks of cysts but a series of subsequent surgeries to remove them from her body left scarring on her left arm. She reflected on her perspective of her illness and how it didn’t truly affect her until other people started looking at and treating her differently. Because she spent a lot of time alone, she’s well practiced in the art of self-reflection and looking within which lead her to a love of hobbies. Her philosophy on life, work for something you love or is important to you. “Adulting can wait until tomorrow.”
Self care, Theresa shares from the book The Radiance Sutras about listening to your heart’s song. Shana shares her experience in processing the passing of a friend. “Any moment of wounding immediately produces a healing response from life.” The Radiance Sutras As always we included clips from the documentary “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” Next week on the show we have Beth Bengston, founder of the non-profit Working for Women, and trans musician Jem Violet
