Today on the show we honor our local community and their work on the #metoo Kingston panel that was held at lastnight at our local LGBTQ center. Also we discuss the Kavanaugh protests, and the power of young Yale women speaking out for the future of women’s rights. Shana also wanted to share New York Times, The Daily podcast on revisiting what happened to Anita Hill in 1991 and what is happening today with Kavanaugh. How far have we come?
Our first guest is Stephanie Monseu, co-founder of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and now new ring mistress of Big Apple Circus!!! Shana recorded this interview last winter 2018, and is timely to air it now that she has this new role to show how this very powerful woman has a history of empowering youth through circus performance, community building, and how she brings all this to her new role as the first female ring master at Big Apple! She dives deep into the metaphors of using circus arts to help youth deal with real life fears, and she discusses how she and her community have been bridging the gap of the gentrification that is very present right now in all communities in the Hudson Valley.
Our second guest is Ariana González Stokas. Ariana is Dean for Inclusive Excellence at Bard Collage . Ariana is also an educator in Latin American and Caribbean Philosophy. Being from Puerto Rican heritage, she has a personal fascination with her own culture. She talks about being a “systems worker, or systems thinker”, she refers to the system of global capital and how it facilities “whiteness and maleness”, and how our institutions are embodiments of that greater dynamic. She’s interested in naming the cause and the solutions for these systems, we know there’s a-lot there!
Self Care? What’s that?!!!! Shana’s self care tip is her daily ritual of taking her Tulsi tincture and setting an intention for the day! Her tincture is made by Dana Ronquist, massage therapist and recent herb school graduate, you too can grab golden hour botanical. Theresa shares about her friends Tara’s free Trauma Sensitive Yoga class.
