On today’s show Shana’s co- host is Lisa Padovani! She is a dynamic costume designer, best known for her work on Party Monster, Mad Men, Gotham and Boardwalk Empire (to name only a few)… we begin:
Have you all seen the show Transparent yet? Lisa just listened to an interview with creator Jill Soloway on NPR about her new book “She Wants It: Desire, Power and Toppling the Patriarchy” . Lisa loved the interview of course, Jill is fascinating, but she was noticing the challenge non gender conforming language. mostly because it is not proper english!!! Lisa has a little school teacher inside of her as she explains, and to call a singular person ‘they/them/their’ just isn’t correct language.. Lisa muses.. we need a better word to refer to our non conforming friends!
Lisa has worked with the top of the top in terms of Hollywood, but she creates a fun, down to earth and pleasant work environment for everyone. One of her “secrets” is acknowledging the cast and crew on set first thing in the morning, greeting everyone with a smile, “paying it forward, our energy carries over to one another, so having a fun peaceful workday starts with this positive gesture”… WE LOVE THAT!!! She also really seems to understand humor and the importance of keeping things light and creative. What is challenging about costume design? “when you are working with an actor you’ve grown up admiring your whole life, like Robert DeNiro, and he’s going to be standing in front of you in his underwear and you have to dress him”…omg omg. PS, here’s that L7 Doc Lisa was watching.
Our second guests today are Pat Humphries and Sandy O of the band Emma’s Revolution. They came into our studio amidst teaching an intuitive song-writing workshop this week at Omega! Their workshop is focused on exploring the craft of songwriting-with a focus on the issues of our times. Quote from their bio: “Songwriting is an innate human skill. As children, we spontaneously make up songs about whatever we’re experiencing in our lives. In this workshop we create space that nurtures our most inspired selves. We delve into exercises that cultivate an intuitive, playful relationship with words and melody, allowing us to create songs that speak to what’s in our heart.”
