#72 Sarah Van Buren “Disco is Long Life” + Art in Public Spaces

SHARE NOW

Broadcasting LIVE from Outdated Lite today, Theresa sits down with Sarah Van Buren, a woman of many talents like: musician, artist, DJ, 24-DRONE Producer, O+ Festival Kingston Producer, Van Buren Sisters legacy holder, cross-country motorcycle rider…the list is long. We talk about the making of her first musical album in 2018, the title of which, “Disco is Long Life,” came to her during a meditation. Music has been a driving force for as long as she can remember. She’s been involved with and producing various musical and creative events from her artist collective, CHERYL, which began out of a need for more accessible and inclusive dance parties closer to home in Brooklyn, NY to 24-Hour DRONE, the O+ Festival and most recently with a DJ collective in the Hudson Valley called “Mostly Girls.” She is the great-great niece of Gussie and Addie Van Buren, two women who rode across country on motorcycles in 1916, a time when women didn’t ride motorcycles period. Sarah repeated their journey on the Centennial anniversary of their famed trip. Would she do it again? Yes.

Midway through the show, we are joined by: Erika deVries, Artist, Teacher, Mom, and co-Creator at Cygnets Way and Lite Brite Neon; Kimberly Kae, Painter, former co-Director of the O+ Art Committee, Mom and most recently co-owner of Metal House Cider; Aimee Gardner, O+ Festival Operations Director and Disaster Mansion Fixer Upper; and Jesika Farkas, O+ Art Committee co-Director and Production Manager for the film industry. We talk about the importance of public art, i.e. access, why we create art, the O+ Festival murals, how they are made, the impact they’ve made on the community and the wrongs in government regulation of public art. In an attempt to summarize the beautiful words shared by today’s guests, what the world needs now is more collaboration, more connection, through art by more community members, not regulation of the thing that brings people together. It’s time for the systems to change.

Today’s show was engineered by Nate Brogan and Perla Darnell of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/
