Hello Hello! And happy SPRING, wow the trees are popping upstate, it’s so gorgeous here. We are driving around with our sunroofs open and sun hats on. We want you to know that we will be taking calls NEXT WEEK, May 1st with our guest Dr. Amy Novatt who is an incredible local gynecologist. You can call the station at 845-331-1490 with your questions from 1:15-2pm EST.
We start by girl talking about the show Shana saw at the Guggenheim last week: Hilma af Klint, Paintings for the Future. She shares about her own history with spiritualism and channeling creativity through wicca and circle casting.
Our first guest is Aimee Herman, a three-time Pushcart Prize nominated poet and writer looking to disembowel the architecture of gender and what it means to queer the body. She shares about being bullied as a kid, mental health, her own attempts at suicide as well as her mother’s and how writing has helped her to explore these deep issues. In addition to her own writing, Aimee teaches writing and literature at Bronx college, and helps to spread self love and acceptance through a letter writing exercise with her students where they write love letters to themselves, and after they’ve forgotten the task she then mails them to her students at a later date. Her first young novel, Everything Grows, is coming out in May. The book explores issues like coming out, gender identity, bullying, mental health and forgiveness. When not teaching or writing, Aimee can be found performing with her band Hydrogen Junkbox. She’s celebrating her book release on Friday, May 10th, at Bluestockings Bookstore in NYC at 7pm located at 172 Allen St. in NYC.
Our second guest today is Heidi Vanderlee. She is a publicist at Shark Party Media cellist and vocalist at** Early Riser** and former booker at the Chris Gethard Show. She’s been a staple in the Brooklyn music scene for quite sometime now. She was part of a music collective in 2010-2012, putting on shows with a feminist perspective, active in politically organizing and booking shows that would donate proceeds to causes for female rights organizations, even helping Pussy Riot at one point! After that work shifted, she started at the Chris Gethard show, exposing her to comedians, musicians and creative audience members that often participated in the show. Always behind the scene, it was great to get Heidi to talk about herself, her insights into the music industry, feminism and following a creative career. Her band is on tour this May 2019, check out their dates: HERE
