In this week’s Girl Talk, Shana shares with listeners the New York City initiative to include more women in the city’s monuments. If you live in one of the five boroughs you can submit your nomination here. Theresa shares about the resistance she is having about being asked to sign an affidavit for a sexual discrimination lawsuit against a former employer and how she found solace in a post shared online at The Nib about why women don’t speak up or want to protect the person who’s done something wrong. If you’re in a similar situation, you may find solace there too.
Poet Gold, published writer, spoken word performance artist, poet, community “artivist,” Dutchess County Poet Laurette and active member of Arts Mid-Hudson and the Artist Action Network, joins us in the studio and shares her perspective on life. Gold speaks about cultivating gratitude, praying everyday, writing when she is so moved, being inspired by others, spreading spoken word and poetry and uplifting others. She’s formed BGW, Inc. a consulting and edutainment business and is starting “DREAM Out Loud” poetry workshop to help people recognize their dreams. Gold is the instigator of Poelodies, a space for others to share their poetry and spoken word Live at the Falcon Underground every 4th Wednesday of the month (that’s TONIGHT) and is the MC at Newburgh’s Open Mic at The Wherehouse every 4th Thursday (that’s TOMORROW). You can find her performing at Maverick Concerts this Saturday and running the music scene at the Poughkeepsie O+ Festival next weekend. Here’s her performance of “What Would Martin Say?“
Anne Macy Hall, artist and birder, talks about her journey through photography and art, about making a photography book with a former partner that tells a women’s love story and how it felt important to bring the female gay perspective to the consciousness, traveling to Iceland, photographing witches, meeting trans-species beings and being immersed in the tranimal world, photographing them using infra-red film, fixing up a Brownstone in Brooklyn, collaborating with animals to make art, moving upstate and founding Catskills Indigo and starting her weekend open studios where anyone can come on July and August Summer Saturdays to learn about dying.
Self care this week takes us to Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic which is inspiring Shana and helping her to strengthen her relationship to her music and her muse and to remember to always remain teachable. Theresa shares from Deborah Adele’s book, The Yamas & Niyamas, on the idea on Non-Stealing and how we should rethink the concept of stealing and as far as self-care goes, not steal from ourselves by self-sabotage, lack of belief in ourselves, low self-esteem, judgments, criticisms, demands for perfection, living in the past or the future or putting up walls around ourselves.
Next week we welcome Jamie Sanin, artist, educator and organizer of CelebrateWomxn845. Theresa will be reporting live from WI and will hopefully be sharing some fun interviews of her nieces. Until next week, love yourself and uplift one another.
